Have you ever wondered what is the cost of economic growth? Nature is sacrificed for GDP (gross domestic product) growth. The problem with the GDP (gross domestic product) growth in the UK is that it is based on sacrificing nature to produce goods with high profit, therefore increasing income. Nature is treated as a source of infinite resources to utilize without the fear of running out. This is a huge mistake. The UK government realized this and asked Partha Dasgupta, Cambridge University Economist, to write a report addressing this issue. He pointed out that GDP ignores the amount of nature that is lost to create growth. We are losing in the long run because, without nature, there would be limited economic growth with the absence of resources. For example, a football team only keeps track of the number of goals scored but not the goals lost. The team could be losing without recognizing it. Relating to the economy, the loss of the environment would be a huge loss for the economy. Therefore, GDP should balance economic growth with the loss of nature to calculate the actual growth or decrease. We shouldn’t pay money for a product but pay for the amount of nature that is destroyed to produce that product. Knowing the prominence of nature, take action to protect Mother Earth now!
